The cancer survivors lap after the opening ceremony
What an awesome weekend! 16 (or so) of our people took to the Newport Aths track to walk continuously from 4pm on Sat 24 Nov to Sunday 10am 25 Nov, to raise money for cancer research. Relay for Life is an 18-hour, overnight team event to raise funds for the Cancer Council Victoria's cancer research, education and support programs. It celebrates the lives of those who have survived cancer, remembers those lost to cancer and supports people battling the disease.
We decided that our church should be a part of this great event in Hobsons Bay so that we can stand alongside others in our community, supporting the good things the community is doing. We raised quite a few dollars in the process and had a great time as well.
Getting the team organised
Athol cooking up a few snags
With around 4 weeks to go to the relay we launched the team. Our task was to make as much money as possible for the cause and get the team in order. With only a week's notice we organised a sausage sizzle outside Tasman Meats in Brooklyn (thanks to Ian and the people at Tasman Meats for the donated snags and the brand new BBQ to sizzle on. Also thanks to Routley's Bakeries for supplying bread).
We didn't sell as many sausages as we anticipated, but we've got a good system now for next time. It was great to see people we knew coming to buy meat (and a cooked snag or two).
Is Nathan praying for more customers for the sausage sizzle???
A home showing of fine jewellery from Amante Jewellery allowed us to do some Christmas shopping while Amante donated 15% of the sales to the Relay for Life. Funds were also raised from team members promoting the event to their friends and workmates and from the latest "Women of Influence" night. There's no doubt that with more time we could have raised more funds, but we were very happy with the result.
Within a very short time we organised team t-shirts, with the church logo and slogan and web address on the back, plus a great looking pull-up banner. We wanted our community to know we were there, not doing things in isolation but being part of their great effort.
A few snaps from the relay:
Cherie's looking fit on the track Saturday afternoon, with the all important team baton in hand.
The next morning - amazing how good you can look with only 3 hours sleep!
Not one of my finest moments (above) but the lack of sleep, and sore legs were worth it. It was great to support the event in this way, and we look forward to raising more, and walking further next year.

I... don't quite know what I'm doing there either, actually.
