Helping Hand Learning is an adult education resource, following themes such as budgeting, socialising, personal health and well being.

The focus is however on individual needs, with support for participants and volunteers to expand their skills in learning how to learn. Each session will go for around 2 hours. Helping Hand Learning began in August 2008.

Our aims are to:

  1. Offer support and learning opportunities to those who suffer literacy disadvantage in our community
  2. Build participant ‘life skills’ incorporating a holistic approach to basic language, financial and technology literacy
  3. Build Helping Hand Learning into a drop-in style community literacy centre encouraging involvement by a wide range of participants and volunteers

The Program Manager is qualified and experienced in adult learning and occupational health and safety. Volunteers will complete a training program and then participate on a rotating roster. Opportunities to take on shared leadership roles (with coaching) will be offered to interested volunteers. At least one facilitator and one volunteer will be present during weekly sessions.

Update: Since commencing in August, Helping Hand Learning  and its volunteers meet weekly on Saturday afternoon with a group of enthusiastic participants. Within only a few weeks we have seen improvements in self confidence and significant developments towards better literacy and numeracy.
