What Should I Expect Print E-mail

Williamstown Church of Christ is “a church that anyone can come to”. These are not just words; we make anyone and everyone welcome. While we base our teachings and philosophy firmly around the Holy Bible we are not a formal church and our services are often interactive.

When you come through our doors you will immediately feel the family atmosphere and the spirit of Christian love and acceptance. You will be greeted and handed our ‘Willi News’ which will give you information about what is on and what is coming up in the church calendar. You may hear children chatting and making joyous noise around the back of the church and we love that sound. They are often invited to the front to join in special activities or take part in the service. There are often special activities planned for them in God's Gang (Sunday School) during the worship time. We have a diverse demographic in our congregation and each individual is invited to participate as they feel they want to.

If you are visiting us, you will not be pressured to participate in anything that makes you uncomfortable.  We respect each person's spiritual journey. If you are wishing to develop your spiritual life, need prayer or advice, or are looking for a church community to be part of, one of our team will be pleased to discuss this with you.

Our Sunday morning time of worship starts at 10am and finishes between 11.15 and 11.30am. If you visit us, you will be encouraged to join us for a coffee or tea in the hall and meet some of our people. If you prefer just to leave straight after worship, that is OK too.

What happens during the worship time?

Typically we start with 2 or 3 songs that help us to praise and thank God for who He is and what He has done for each of us. We pray for issues in the world, for each other and for ourselves; listen to readings from scripture; reflect on teaching brought to us by our minister Lynette or another speaker; share Communion, pray and sing some more. Often members of the church share their stories about how God is working in their lives.

We celebrate Communion (the Lord's Supper/Eucharist) each Sunday. During this time we focus on the gift of reconciliation and restoration with God that was made possible through the death of Jesus on the cross. We each take a small glass of grape juice (representing the blood of Christ) and a wafer of unleavened bread (representing his body). We welcome christians from other traditions to participate with us in this special celebration. We only ask that if you take part, you do so in a spirit of reverence and reflect on the suffering of Jesus and His deep love for each of us. Communion is usually led by a lay member of the church (i.e. not a priest or minister), because Churches of Christ believe that all believers are "priests" :

1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him, who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Above all you will find a relaxed atmosphere - not rigid and formal. We laugh and enjoy each other's company, sharing in community. But we do not forget that we come together to honour God.
